|EXTENDED RUN TIME FOR HONDA
OR YAMAHA GENERATORS
|....they show lots of options and big prices plus shipping....the machined gas cap is $30 on web or available at Western Trailer &
Marine Sales in Havre,MT, the tennis ball is 3 for $4 at K-mart and the rubber hose is @ $1.80 for 4 feet. Honda and some Yamaha
generators have a fuel pump that will draw fuel from a reserve tank till empty. (for this to work on your generator it does need to
have its own fuel pump and can not be a gravity feed fuel system).
Once the auxiliary tank is empty the generator will then use its own fuel tank supply. I always carry lots of fuel tanks of various sizes
when traveling out to the boon docks....it is much easier to remove the yellow anti spill plate under gas cap the replace gas cap and
tighten...shove hose down spout of fuel can to the bottom then adjust tennis ball on fuel hose for that depth....push ball over fuel
cap and you are ready to go.
I cut a 1 3/4 inch hole in tennis ball then punched a 5/16 hole in top to get a tight fit on fuel hose....this makes a weather and bug
proof fit.....by twisting the ball CCW(counter clock wise) the cap stays in the ball and is ready to install in next 6 gallon can.....left
over gas can be poured into the generator tank .....I tried tennis ball on my gas cans that are 1 thru 6 gallon in size and all fits are
perfect......TENNIS balls come in 3 inch or 2 1/4 inch size....select the 3 incher for kids...ages 8 and under as the rubber in these
balls are softer and will stretch over gas can caps.
Small Honda generators on their stock fuel tank will run @ 8 hours on 1/4 load but only 3 1/2 hours on a full load so a reserve fuel
system is nice to have.....I’m tired of spilling or over filling the tank and lifting heavy gas cans, especially in the middle of the
night!!!!!!!! I didn't want to commit an auxiliary gas can full of fuel just for the generator as I might need it for something else, so
having the ability of using any fuel can that I have on the trip makes more sense. Since we all carry gas cans when out in the boon
docks a good supply of FRESH fuel is usually near by!!!!!!!
FOOT NOTE..leave fuel tank gas cap loose or open vent cap on auxiliary gas tank to stop any vapor locking caused from the
suction of the internal fuel pumps. It also relives pressures that will build up in your reserve tank as a result of outdoor daily
temperature changes or tank exposure to sun light....a non-vented container will force fuel up the hose flooding the generator
(same forces caused by not opening the factory gas cap vent lever when not using a reserve tank)...good luck with this project.....
|NO MORE SPILLING OF FUEL WHEN TRYING TO REFUEL YOUR GENERATOR
NO MORE HAVING TO GET UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT TO REFUEL YOUR GENERATOR
SIMPLE INEXPENSIVE SELF DO-IT PROJECT THAT COULD ADD UP
TO 85 HOURS OF RUN TIME TO YOUR SMALL GENERATOR
TOTAL COST IS ABOUT $35.00
